When you think of persuasion, you may remember the Greek terms logos (appeal to reason), ethos (appeal to authority), and pathos (appeal to emotion). But in marketing, persuasion goes far beyond these three methods.

There are six persuasion strategies every network marketer needs to know. Keep reading to learn all about them. 

1. Reciprocity

Reciprocity is the principle that giving begets receiving. In other words, sometimes you have to give a little to get a little. 

Here’s an example of reciprocity in action. You’re on the fence about buying a new car, so the salesperson sweetens the deal with a year of free tune-ups thrown in. Now, you’re more likely to make the purchase. 

2. Authority

In a capitalist economy, consumers have options. But you’ll probably agree that you’re more likely to buy from someone you trust — AKA someone who’s an “authority” on the subject.

Authority is the reason why, for instance, we’re more likely to buy kitchenwares endorsed by famous chefs. 

3. Social Proof

Social proof speaks to the fact that people like to “keep up with the Joneses.” We’re more likely to do something if others around us are doing it, too. And the more people we see doing something, the even more likely we are to do it, too. 

For example, a 2017 study looked at the effects of the number of social media followers on purchasing decisions. The researchers found that consumers were more likely to buy from someone with more followers than fewer followers. 

4. Commitment

People like to feel as if they’re contributing to something greater than themselves. If you involve people with your brand, they’ll become committed.

The difference between a regular and a committed customer? The latter acts more like a devoted fan. Committed customers do much of the marketing for you, shouting from the rooftops about how much they love your brand. 

5. Liking

We hate to break it to you, but most humans are just a little bit narcissistic. That’s why we’re more likely to do something for someone we like. Making a purchase is no exception. 

Think about school fundraisers. There’s a reason kids make more sales relatives than strangers. It’s all about the principle of liking. 

6. Scarcity

When a resource is scarce, demand goes up. This is because we tend to prefer rare and unique items, especially when it’s hard to get our hands on them.

Take the sneaker resale culture as an example. Because companies like Nike have harnessed the principle of scarcity, consumers will happily fork up thousands of dollars for a pair of sneakers that cost $100 originally.
